Book Antelope

Bowhunting antelope  in Wyoming has always been a real challenge for me. It seems every year it is either to dry, or to wet to set up any blinds to hunt the critters. This year was no different.  The conditions were extremely dry with no ponds to be found.  The only water was the South Platte River, and that was impossible to hunt as the antelope did not pattern at all.  The only way we could hunt the Antelope was to stalk them.

We set out Sat. (9-3-05) to find some animals, which we saw a lot.  Next we tried to stalk them in open country.  As you know Antelope have at least 8 power vision, so if they saw any movement, the big bucks would take of.

On the third day of the hunt we tried something a little bit different.  We took out our portable antelope decoy and tried to stalk the bucks.  We would locate the bucks, walk straight at them until they stood up and started walking.  Then we would parallel the bucks.  We held up the decoy with a shooter behind it as we worked our way closer and closer as we walked.  The first try was a miss at 76 yards thanks to a strong cross wind.

My second try with this method was at 70 yards and my arrow hit the mark.  The buck went only 15 to 20 yards before he piled up.  To my surprise he green scored 89 P&Y.  This is the biggest Antelope I have taken with bow or gun!

I guess the moral of this story is try something new if the old way doesn’t work.
