The Surprise Bull

The 2010 elk archery season was disappointing for me.  I really wanted to harvest an elk with my bow, but things just didn’t work out for me.  The 2011 elk archery season, thus far, has been a little more enjoyable with the “Surprise Bull”.

Deer Season is Coming

For most of us deer season never really ends.  As soon as the season is closed in our area we are already making plans on how we can get a shot at a monster buck next season.  Scouting continues so we can see which bucks made it through the winter. Then there is shed hunting, looking at new property, stand set up or moving, etc., it never ends.  I think that is why we all love whitetail hunting so much!

Re Thinking Elk Calling

Elk calls weren’t always as technical as they are now. An empty 30-06 shell casing makes for a great elk whistle. You don’t here much about elk whistles these days, but I would encourage you to re-think the whistles.  Reason being elk are educated these days.

Father/Son Elk Hunt

After over 25 years of talking about going elk hunting with my Dad we finally found the time to make it happen in 2010.  We had access to hunt some private property near Montrose, Colorado.  The property was situated in the valley surrounded by mountains in the distance.

Hunting with Mellon Creek Outfitters

I recently had the opportunity to hunt with Mellon Creek Outfitters near Refugio, Texas. This was my first experience hunting with a full service outfitter and what a pleasant experience it was!

Halloween Buck

On the last day of my hunt the temperature had climbed to the mid 60's but at least the wind had let up some. I decided to hunt a stand that I had not hunted before. This stand was situated in a small wood lot that was surrounded by fields. To my left was a hay field, to my right was a sunflower and alfalfa field and in front of me was a wheat field.

Candles on the Cake

If a man is lucky, he will celebrate many birthdays before his days on this earth are done. Some birthdays mean little more than just another day on the calendar, but some are special and are remembered as such.

An Early Christmas

I had time to make one more whitetail hunt with Christmas still being a week away.  The kids got out of school early Friday and we were packed and ready to go when Donna arrived home.  Five hours later we were pulling into our deer lease in McCullough County.  After a quick set up I was finally able to get to sleep.

First Buck of the Year

The 2008 Texas whitetail season was underway and I could not get the thoughts of scoring on a good buck early out of my head.  I had several unsuccessful hunts under my belt for the 2008 season and I was starting to think this year would be like every other year where I do not get a shot opportunity until late in the season.

Morgan's Turkey

With the arrival of the general whitetail season here in Texas came a lot of excitement around my house.  It was finally time to take my youngest daughter, Morgan, hunting.  You see Morgan hunts with a crossbow and they are not legal to hunt with during the archery only season............
