Since my main interest is Traditional Bowhunting, and since this is a new Forum, I think it would be fun if we state how we got started in bowhunting. So here goes........................

I started over 50 years ago, with a second-hand longbow. I don't even remember what the draw weight was, the only thing for sure was it was a love affair that has lasted for all these years.

I started hunting squirrels, rabbits, frogs and about anything else that was legal. Spending several hours daily practicing. I believe I was 14 when I got my first deer , a small buck in woods of Eastern Oklahoma. Several deer, turkeys, and hogs have walked into my arrows, and of course an equal number have kept on walking, running are what ever. Very Happy

The years I spent in military as a pilot, allowed me to hunt various states, from Georgia, Alabama, Colorado, New Mexico, Neveda, Califorina, Oklahoma, and of course Texas which has been my home state for the last 30 years.

My current bow is a Black Widow PMA-V recurve, with two sets of limbs, 45# and 57#'s. It's the second B/W I've owned over the years, and is by far one of the best shooting bow's I have ever owned.

I make my own arrows, which is not only fun, it's relaxing to me. Plus I love the smell of cedar arrows. However, I will be hunting this year with a new set of Carbon Express traditional shafts that I have made up with the Silverflame broadheads, that are made in Germany.....one great broadhead.

I hope to meet many more Traditionalist here.......so give me shout.

I do own two traditional bows but I do not hunt with them very much. I own 2 Mathews Heritage 65# and 45# long bows. I took a javi with my bow the first year I got it but I just have not had the guts to put down my compound bow and hunt with just the long bow.

I got hooked on archery when I was a kid. I got one of the blue fiberglass bows and I shot homemade arrows made out of tree limbs until I out grew the bow. A lot of frogs fell victim to the sharp pointed sticks.

As I grew older my Dad gave me one of his old compound bows. I hunted hard with that bow but never scored. I finally killed my first pig and deer with I was in 23. I have been hooked ever since!

Below is a photo of my long bow javi.

When I was 12 years old, Santy Claus brought me a brand new Ben Pearson solid fiberglass bow, complete with plastic quiver and 3 wooden arrows with field tips. I didn’t even know what a broadhead was back then.

After church on Sundays, our routine was to travel from my home town of Olney, TX to my aunt and uncle’s place at Archer City, TX for Sunday dinner. While the old folks either watched football on TV or played a game of 42, my brother and I would grab our BB guns or in this case, my bow and head to the pasture.

On this day, we soon came up on this unsuspecting armadillo and I cut loose at him with my trusty bow and arrow. Struck him right in the end of the nose! The race was on and he dropped the arrow right off and ducked into a nearby armadillo hole.

My brother grabbed him by the tail and tried with all his might to pull him out. But the armadillo would kinda swell his body against the sides of the hole and he couldn’t budge him.

Well, about this time I had a flash of brilliance.

My brother held onto his tail and pulled as hard as he could. I took my arrow and jabbed him (the armadillo) right in the bung hole! When he kinda sucked up, my brother yanked him out!

I was then able to get another shot on him before he made his escape and well – the rest is history.
