Show Us How It's Done Kids

The Brazos Archery Outfitters crew and friends have just returned from another Spring Break Javelina Hunt. This annual trip has become somewhat of a tradition for us during the week of Spring Break. I believe this was our 15th trip. Even though most our kids have grown up, they still look forward to the Spring Break hunt with ole Dad!

When we first started doing this, it was for the experience of getting our kids into the woods for a little bowhunting and to teach them the tricks of the trade. Apparently the kids learned well as they pretty much outdid the old guys on this trip.

We traveled to one of our favorite ranches, the Summers Ranch near Encinal, TX for 3 days of poking around in the thorny brush for these long toothed little critters.  The Summers Ranch is approximately 5000 ac in size and has a good population of javelina and feral hogs and more rabbits than you can afford arrows to shoot at!

We arrived on Wednesday around noon and quickly unloaded our gear, anxious to get down to the business of bowhunting.  Since we’d hunted this ranch numerous times in the past, we had a pretty good idea about where to start our search.  Apparently the javelina were expecting us and made it a point to be where we expected them to be.

Eric Cox of Keller, TX got his 1st and 2nd bow kills this afternoon on two nice javelina.

Dad, Lyndon Cox tried to keep up, but couldn’t quite hang with Eric but did manage to score on a good one of his own.

The father son team started us out in fine fashion.

Kelly Loyd from Oklahoma City, OK came in with the first of the day on Thursday, but his was the only kill of the morning hunt.

Things picked up a little that afternoon and  Kendall Holland of Ada, OK broke in a new Mathews Switchback XT with a nice javelina kill.

Tim Horst of Abilene, TX came in with the first of two he’d take on this trip Thursday evening too.

Friday turned off pretty hot and the javelina didn’t move as well but Ben Horst of Graham took a nice one early in the day.

Things cooled off near dark and the pigs began to move a little again and Kurt McKamie of Ada, OK stuck a nice one too.

Most of the crew packed up and headed for home early on Saturday, but the Horst family stayed behind for one more morning hunt and it proved to be a good move.  Geoff Horst of Sanger, TX took one and his brother Tim and father Ben each scored on their 2nd  each of the trip.

Eleven javelina and one  great time was the score. Already looking forward to Spring Break 2007. Maybe the kids will take pitty on us old guys next year – but I doubt it!
