Bowhunting North America's Weekly Tip

Mark It Off

Here’s a little trick that might give you the extra seconds you need to make a good clean shot at that trophy buck when he comes walking into your shooting lane this fall.

Go to your local hardware store or lumber yard and buy a few neon colored survey flags. I’m talking about the kind with the stiff wire used by utility companies to mark underground pipes and cables.

Climb into your stand and look at all the shooting lanes and positions where you’d expect a deer to step out. Take out your range finder and check the distance to each spot. Then, with a broad permanent marker, write the yardage on the neon flag and push it into the ground at that spot.

Of course it goes without saying that you need to use a quality range finder that can give you an accurate reading. I prefer the Nikon Team Realtree Laser 600.

When that big buck steps out, you won’t have to take time to check the yardage – you’ll already know it.

If hunting multiple stand sites, it’s easy to forget the exact yardage in each shooting lane, but with the flag in place and the yardage marked on it – all you need to do is glance and you’re ready for the shot.

Sometimes that big buck will only give you a few seconds shot opportunity and you don’t want to waste it by fumbling for your range finder. Give it a try. It might be just the edge you need to take that trophy of a lifetime.

And this is your Bowhunting North America Tip of the Week!
