Bowhunting North America's Weekly Tip

Hold It Down Please

Imagine yourself as a white-tailed deer. From the moment you’re born, something is looking to eat you! Is it any wonder that these awesome animals are always “wired” and on the edge!

Seems like the least little noise or movement will send these critters bounding into the next county. A well hidden stand and a good camo pattern like Advantage Max-1 can go a long way toward hiding your movement. The next issue to deal with is noise.

We all know that a deer’s reaction time is quicker than a ninja warrior and to date no one has invented a bow that will shoot an arrow faster than the speed of sound. So, you can expect a deer to “jump string” almost every time – but that’s a given and you can counteract that by planning your shot and holding a little low on the target.

What you don’t want to happen is to have the deer hear you draw your bow. This puts the animal on instant alert and makes the shot even more difficult if it even stands around long enough to give you a shot at all! Take every precaution you can to keep your hunting equipment as quiet as possible.

The biggest culprit in giving you away on the draw is the arrow rest. The friction between the rest and the arrow can sometimes make an ear piercing screech and will cause a deer to turn wrong side out! The use of an arrow with a smooth surface like the Carbon Express Maxima Hunter will eliminate much of the friction and noise, but to completely eliminate any noise a simple solution is to cover the rest itself in a soft material such as mole skin.

This inexpensive material is available in the drug department of most any store. It can even be purchased in various camo patterns and is very easy to apply. Just cut to size, peel and stick and you’re set to go. Noise eliminated.

I even like to line the shelf of the bow to eliminate any noise in case the arrow accidentally comes in contact with the bow riser.

Take a few minutes in the off season make this change to your equipment now and it could save you a lifetime of disappointment on your next hunt.

And this is your Bowhunting North America Tip of the Week!
